Carbon dioxide is a heat-trapping gas responsible for the greenhouse effect. It's a combination of carbon, an element that is found all over the world, and oxygen, the air we breathe. Although the carbon cycle naturally moves carbon from one part of the Earth to another, by burning fossil fuels more carbon is added to the atmosphere. Thus, CO2 builds faster than the natural process can remove it.
